The children have created some amazing projects this year and I thought that we could use the time during this class to add new notes and upload a few things to their Evernote accounts. The classroom teachers can use their writing time to reflect on some of the projects that have taken place this year in and out of the classroom.
Our Personalized Learning Specialist has developed a model of reflection called RIP3 Reflection. The students are encouraged to use this to prompt them in the process.

Lesson: Using Kidspiration to Write

3rd Graders will work on a Kidspiration activity in writing mode to explore several topics in Colonial America. They will use their power writing skills and research skills to create a piece that will later be published as 5 paragraphs telling about colonial life.
The students will open the file below and SAVE it in their own folder with their initials behind it. They will work in writing mode.

Lesson: Comparing and Contrasting Now/Then
Date: February 4-13, 2014
Mrs. Harris has prepared several images of colonial times that need to be sorted, classified and discussed. All of the images will be scattered around the room. The students will decide how to categorize all of them and decide as a group how that image relates to colonial times.
We will fill in a quick Venn diagram on the promethean board and discuss Now/Then/Same to lead up to the next activity.

Lesson: Coding for Kids
Date: December 12-January 6, 2013
Hour of Code is a national program to expose children and adults to the basic understandings of programming and code. Students will be exposed to the fundamentals of code, it's purpose and basic functions. All of this will be done through the progression of different apps.
Students will learn about basic coding through Daisy the Dinosaur, Kodable and Hopscotch. The goal for them is that they understand that commands produce an action on a device.
Here is an example of two of my students in 4th grade sharing their experience with Hopscotch.
Challenge: Use Hopscotch to create different shapes.

Lesson: iMovie on the iPad- Mountain Ranges
Date: November 19-December 13, 2013
Students in Grade 3 will work in teams for their mountain range and begin to prepare an iMovie with all of the research information that they've gathered. Each team will find images that will represent each topic in their research, save them to the camera roll and insert them into their new project.
This lesson will be followed with adding their audio from their papers that they've written and publishing their work to YouTube.

Date: November 5-18, 2013
3rd Grade students are beginning their Mountain Research Paper and will use the time in the Idea Lab to help gather information and research their mountain range. After this paper is written we will use the lab to create iMovies for each mountain range.
All of the resources are listed on the 3rd Grade Mountain Ranges Page. It is encouraged that all students take advantage of the subscription resources first, before searching independently on the internet.

Date: October 11-19, 2013
Goals: Children will use a word processor to alter text size, color and font. Objectives: Children will learn that text size, style and color can be altered when using word processing software. Procedure:
1. TSW click the file called Playing with Microsoft Word that's located in the related links column. They will chose SAVE AS and save it to their folder. From there they may open it and begin editing.
2. TSW follow the directions on the page and complete the task.
3. TSW save their work in their folder and name itmswordedit
Lesson: Typing Pal Online- Move On Games and Envelopes
Date: October 22-29, 2013
3rd Graders will continue to work on their typing skills. We will focus on home row fingering and the importance of accuracy vs. speed. As the students complete apples, they can also work on the MOVE ON tab and type the Useful Words and the Games.
Today we will spend time practicing our apples and then play games against one another. I love that this becomes a friendly competition!

Lesson: Typing Pal Online
Date: October 10-21, 2013
Third Graders will "officially" begin Typing Pal Online this rotation. We will discuss correct technique and the balance between accuracy and speed.
All students will log on to the Typing Pal Onlinewebsite and enter the institution code trinitys along with their username and password that they've been given. This will be their username and password until they graduate in grade 6.
Each student's progress will be monitored and is individualized based on their needs.
It is highly encouraged that all students spend 5-10 minutes each evening practicing their typing skills.
Students will learn about the importance of telling a trusted adult if they see anything online that makes them feel sad, scared or confused. They practice giving advice to friends who are upset about something they saw online.
Clicky, Nettie, and Webster race to stop Look-At-Dis Louie from spreading bad pictures online. But they better get to him fast, before he turns the whole town gray!

Lesson: Evernote and the iPad
Date: Sept 6-13. 2012
Students in 3rd Grade will use the iPads to log on to their EVERNOTE account. They will open the Evernote app and log on using their Trinity username and password. We will discuss the notebooks that they have and how they will be adding to the 3rd Grade My Learning notebook for this year. Students will learn how to make a new note, add a title, take their picture and brainstorm a list of adjectives that describe the first few weeks of school. We will also make an audio recording telling the following things.

Today we are going to participate in a QR Code Scavenger Hunt. What is a QR Code? How do you read it? QR stands for Quick Response, it is a trademark that automotive factories used to track and mark their vehicles. The code consists of black modules (square dots) arranged in a square pattern on a white background. When you scan it, information is read and stored.
Mrs. Harris will introduce the lesson with "Where did Mrs. Harris go this summer?". The lesson is on the bulletin board. We will scan all of the codes and see where I went this summer!
During this activity, students will learn about QR Codes, but more importantly, they will become familiar with the iPad and the CAMERA app and all that it is capable of.
